Indiana salary calculator: what your result means

Your result is take-home pay after federal taxes, Indiana state tax and, if you choose a county, county income tax. In the $60,000 example, federal income tax is about 8.4% of gross pay, Social Security and Medicare 7.7%, and Indiana state tax 2.9%.

County tax can add more than half again to the state amount: in Marion County (Indianapolis) the rate is 2.02%. Leave the county on "No local tax / not sure" to see state tax alone.

At $100,000 a year, take-home pay is about $2,933.05 every two weeks, or $76,259 a year before county tax. A $40,000 salary paid weekly comes to about $637.88 per paycheck.

  • Each WH-4 personal exemption lowers yearly withheld wages by $1,000, each dependent who qualifies for the additional dependent exemption (WH-4 lines 6 and 7) by a further $1,500, and each adopted child by $3,000. County tax is figured on the same amount.

Indiana's state rate is 2.95% for 2026 and is scheduled to fall to 2.90% in 2027. Employers subtract an exemption amount for each line of your Form WH-4, spread over your paychecks: $1,000 a year for each exemption on line 5 (including one per dependent), a further $1,500 for each dependent who qualifies on lines 6 and 7, and $3,000 per adopted child. State tax is the remaining wages times the rate.

We treat 401(k), Section 125 health insurance, HSA and FSA deductions as lowering Indiana wages, as they do federally, while we confirm the state's rule.

County income tax

All 92 Indiana counties levy an income tax, withheld on the same wages as state tax. The county is the one you lived in on January 1, and it stays the same for the whole year even if you move. If you lived outside Indiana on January 1 but mainly worked in an Indiana county, that county's rate applies instead.

Rates run from 0.5% to 3%. Boone County's rate changed on October 1, 2026; the calculator uses the current rate.

Things to know about Indiana paychecks

Federal taxes on every paycheck

Every US paycheck has the same three federal deductions, whichever state you work in. Together, Social Security and Medicare are called FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) taxes.

  • Federal income tax withholding. Withholding is tax your employer takes out of each paycheck and sends to the IRS on your behalf. The amount depends on your pay and your Form W-4, using the IRS method in Publication 15-T. It is an estimate of your yearly tax; you settle the difference when you file your return.
  • Social Security. 6.2% of your wages, up to the wage base of $184,500 for the year. The wage base is the most pay that Social Security tax applies to.
  • Medicare. 1.45% of all your wages, with no limit. Once your pay from one employer passes $200,000 in a year, your employer also withholds an extra 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on the amount above it.

Ways to change your paycheck

To change Indiana withholding, give your employer a new Form WH-4. Lines 5 to 8 set your exemptions; lines 9 and 10 let you ask for extra state and county withholding each paycheck.

Enter your county and WH-4 lines under More options to match your stub.

  • Update your Form W-4. Claiming dependents, checking the Step 2 box or asking for extra withholding changes how much federal tax comes out of each paycheck. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help you fill it in.
  • Pre-tax deductions. Money you put into a traditional 401(k), an HSA or employer health insurance comes out before federal income tax, so your take-home pay drops by less than the amount you save.
  • Bonuses. Employers often withhold federal tax on a bonus paid separately at a flat rate. Add a bonus under More options to see it.
