Oregon salary calculator: what your result means

Your result is take-home pay after federal taxes, Oregon income tax, Paid Leave Oregon and the transit tax. In the $60,000 example, federal income tax is about 8.4% of gross pay, Social Security and Medicare 7.7%, and Oregon tax and deductions 7.8%.

Oregon withholding depends on your federal withholding, so anything that changes your federal tax, such as your W-4 filing status or dependents, changes your Oregon line too. Oregon withholding is rounded to the dollar.

At $100,000 a year, take-home pay is about $2,733.45 every two weeks, or $71,070 a year. A $40,000 salary paid weekly comes to about $597.62 per paycheck.

  • Thresholds apply to the yearly base: wages minus federal tax withheld (up to $8,750) and the standard deduction of $2,910 ($5,820 married). Each OR-W-4 allowance is a $263 credit.

Oregon's formula starts with your yearly wages, subtracts the federal income tax withheld (up to $8,750, phased out for single filers from $125,000) and a standard deduction of $2,910 ($5,820 if married), then applies rates from 4.75% to 9.9%. Each OR-W-4 allowance takes $263 off the yearly tax. Single employees with three or more allowances use the married formula.

Oregon wages leave out section 125 cafeteria plan, flexible spending, 401(k) and HSA deductions. Bonuses paid separately can be withheld at a flat 8%.

Paid Leave Oregon and the statewide transit tax

Paid Leave Oregon is funded at 1% of wages up to $184,500; employees pay 60% of that, 1%. The statewide transit tax is 0.1% of wages for Oregon residents and for nonresidents working in Oregon. The TriMet and Lane transit taxes are paid by employers, not taken from pay.

In the Portland area, Metro and Multnomah County levy their own income taxes for high earners. Employers there must withhold them only from employees earning $200,000 or more (Metro at 1% of income above that), and employees can opt in or out, so the calculator leaves them out.

Things to know about Oregon paychecks

Federal taxes on every paycheck

Every US paycheck has the same three federal deductions, whichever state you work in. Together, Social Security and Medicare are called FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) taxes.

  • Federal income tax withholding. Withholding is tax your employer takes out of each paycheck and sends to the IRS on your behalf. The amount depends on your pay and your Form W-4, using the IRS method in Publication 15-T. It is an estimate of your yearly tax; you settle the difference when you file your return.
  • Social Security. 6.2% of your wages, up to the wage base of $184,500 for the year. The wage base is the most pay that Social Security tax applies to.
  • Medicare. 1.45% of all your wages, with no limit. Once your pay from one employer passes $200,000 in a year, your employer also withholds an extra 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on the amount above it.

Ways to change your paycheck

To change Oregon withholding, give your employer a Form OR-W-4. Allowances on it lower your yearly Oregon withholding, and you can ask for an extra amount each paycheck.

Because the formula subtracts federal tax, changing your federal W-4 also changes your Oregon withholding a little.

  • Update your Form W-4. Claiming dependents, checking the Step 2 box or asking for extra withholding changes how much federal tax comes out of each paycheck. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help you fill it in.
  • Pre-tax deductions. Money you put into a traditional 401(k), an HSA or employer health insurance comes out before federal income tax, so your take-home pay drops by less than the amount you save.
  • Bonuses. Employers often withhold federal tax on a bonus paid separately at a flat rate. Add a bonus under More options to see it.
