Pennsylvania salary calculator: what your result means

Your result is take-home pay after federal taxes, Pennsylvania income tax, the employee unemployment contribution and any local taxes you choose. In the $60,000 example, federal income tax is about 8.4% of gross pay, Social Security and Medicare 7.7%, and Pennsylvania tax and UC 3.1%.

Choose where you live and where you work under More options: your home sets your local earned income tax rate, and your work location can add its Local Services Tax and, if higher, its nonresident rate.

At $100,000 a year, take-home pay is about $2,924.61 every two weeks, or $76,040 a year before local taxes. A $40,000 salary paid weekly comes to about $635.85 per paycheck.

Pennsylvania withholds 3.07% of compensation for residents and nonresidents alike, with no allowances or filing status. Unlike federal tax, Pennsylvania taxes your 401(k), 403(b) and 457 contributions and dependent care accounts; health insurance under a qualified cafeteria plan is excluded. Employees also pay unemployment compensation tax of 0.07% on all wages.

Local earned income tax and Local Services Tax

Under Act 32, employers withhold the higher of two rates: the total resident rate for the municipality and school district where you live, or the nonresident rate where you work. Both use the same wage base as state tax. The calculator includes every municipality in the state's register.

The Local Services Tax is a flat yearly amount set by the municipality where you work, up to $52 in most places, taken in equal parts each pay period. Where it's more than $10, people earning less than $12,000 a year are exempt.

Philadelphia isn't part of Act 32. It levies its own Wage Tax, 3.735% for residents and 3.425% for nonresidents from July 1, 2026, and taxes 401(k) and cafeteria plan deductions too. People eligible for Pennsylvania tax forgiveness can claim a refund down to 1.5%.

Things to know about Pennsylvania paychecks

Federal taxes on every paycheck

Every US paycheck has the same three federal deductions, whichever state you work in. Together, Social Security and Medicare are called FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) taxes.

  • Federal income tax withholding. Withholding is tax your employer takes out of each paycheck and sends to the IRS on your behalf. The amount depends on your pay and your Form W-4, using the IRS method in Publication 15-T. It is an estimate of your yearly tax; you settle the difference when you file your return.
  • Social Security. 6.2% of your wages, up to the wage base of $184,500 for the year. The wage base is the most pay that Social Security tax applies to.
  • Medicare. 1.45% of all your wages, with no limit. Once your pay from one employer passes $200,000 in a year, your employer also withholds an extra 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on the amount above it.

Ways to change your paycheck

There's no Pennsylvania W-4: the state rate doesn't depend on allowances or filing status, so the main way to lower Pennsylvania tax is a qualified cafeteria plan deduction. For local tax, employers rely on the Residency Certification Form you give them.

Bonuses are added to your pay for the period and taxed at 3.07%.

  • Update your Form W-4. Claiming dependents, checking the Step 2 box or asking for extra withholding changes how much federal tax comes out of each paycheck. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help you fill it in.
  • Pre-tax deductions. Money you put into a traditional 401(k), an HSA or employer health insurance comes out before federal income tax, so your take-home pay drops by less than the amount you save.
  • Bonuses. Employers often withhold federal tax on a bonus paid separately at a flat rate. Add a bonus under More options to see it.
