  • Thresholds are yearly wages after a $7,400 allowance for single filers ($7,950 married) and $1,000 per IT-2104 allowance. The withholding tables include steps that recapture the benefit of lower rates, so some rows look higher than the next.

Employers subtract an allowance for your filing status, $7,400 a year for single filers and $7,950 for married filers, plus $1,000 for each IT-2104 allowance, and then use New York's exact-calculation tables for the pay period. The tables build in the state's rate recapture. Above $1,077,550 of yearly net wages for single filers, a top-rate method applies instead.

New York follows federal rules for most pre-tax deductions: 401(k), Section 125 health insurance and dependent care aren't withheld on. Bonuses paid separately can be withheld at a flat 11.70% for state tax.

Paid Family Leave and disability insurance

In 2026 employees pay 0.432% of gross wages for Paid Family Leave each pay period, up to $411.91 a year. Employers may also collect half of one percent of wages for disability benefits (DBL), but no more than 60 cents a week; the calculator shows the most they can collect.

Things to know about New York paychecks

NYC paycheck calculator

New York City taxes the wages of everyone who lives in the five boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island), wherever they work. People who commute into the city from elsewhere don't pay it. To use this as an NYC paycheck calculator, choose New York City resident under More options.

NYC withholding starts at 2.05% and reaches 4.25% on yearly net wages above $60,000, after an allowance of $5,000 for single filers plus the same per-allowance amount as state tax. Bonuses paid separately can be withheld at a flat 4.25% for city tax.

Yonkers works differently: residents pay a surcharge of 16.75% of their New York State withholding, and nonresidents who work in Yonkers pay 0.50% of wages after a small exclusion.

Federal taxes on every paycheck

Every US paycheck has the same three federal deductions, whichever state you work in. Together, Social Security and Medicare are called FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) taxes.

  • Federal income tax withholding. Withholding is tax your employer takes out of each paycheck and sends to the IRS on your behalf. The amount depends on your pay and your Form W-4, using the IRS method in Publication 15-T. It is an estimate of your yearly tax; you settle the difference when you file your return.
  • Social Security. 6.2% of your wages, up to the wage base of $184,500 for the year. The wage base is the most pay that Social Security tax applies to.
  • Medicare. 1.45% of all your wages, with no limit. Once your pay from one employer passes $200,000 in a year, your employer also withholds an extra 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on the amount above it.

Ways to change your paycheck

To change New York withholding, give your employer a new Form IT-2104. It sets your filing status and allowances for state, New York City and Yonkers tax, and you can ask for extra withholding for each.

  • Update your Form W-4. Claiming dependents, checking the Step 2 box or asking for extra withholding changes how much federal tax comes out of each paycheck. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help you fill it in.
  • Pre-tax deductions. Money you put into a traditional 401(k), an HSA or employer health insurance comes out before federal income tax, so your take-home pay drops by less than the amount you save.
  • Bonuses. Employers often withhold federal tax on a bonus paid separately at a flat rate. Add a bonus under More options to see it.
