Maine salary calculator: what your result means
Your result is take-home pay after federal taxes, Maine income tax and PFML. In the $60,000 example, federal income tax is about 8.4% of gross pay, Social Security and Medicare 7.7%, and Maine income tax plus PFML 4.8%.
Maine withholding is rounded to the nearest dollar each paycheck. The calculator uses the tables Maine Revenue Services revised in August 2026 for a higher standard deduction and the new surcharge.
At $100,000 a year, take-home pay is about $2,821.15 every two weeks, or $73,350 a year. A $40,000 salary paid weekly comes to about $632.16 per paycheck.

- Each W-4ME allowance lowers withheld wages by $5,300 a year, and a withholding standard deduction of $12,850 ($28,550 married) phases out at higher incomes.
- A new 2% surcharge applies to income over $1,000,000 ($1,500,000 married) from 2026.
Employers annualize your pay, subtract $5,300 for each W-4ME allowance and a Maine standard deduction for withholding ($12,850 single, $28,550 married) that phases out at higher incomes, then apply rates from 5.8% to 7.15%. From 2026 a 2% surcharge applies to income above $1,000,000 ($1,500,000 for married couples). Heads of household are withheld at single rates. No Maine city or town taxes wages.
Maine withholds on payments subject to federal withholding unless the income is excluded, so this calculator lets 401(k), Section 125 health insurance, HSA and FSA deductions lower Maine wages too, while we confirm the details.
Paid Family and Medical Leave premium
Maine's PFML premium is up to 1% of wages, and no more than half of that, 0.5%, can come from the employee. Wages count up to the Social Security wage base of $184,500. Employers with fewer than 15 workers owe only the employee half and may deduct all of it.

Federal taxes on every paycheck
Every US paycheck has the same three federal deductions, whichever state you work in. Together, Social Security and Medicare are called FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) taxes.
- Federal income tax withholding. Withholding is tax your employer takes out of each paycheck and sends to the IRS on your behalf. The amount depends on your pay and your Form W-4, using the IRS method in Publication 15-T. It is an estimate of your yearly tax; you settle the difference when you file your return.
- Social Security. 6.2% of your wages, up to the wage base of $184,500 for the year. The wage base is the most pay that Social Security tax applies to.
- Medicare. 1.45% of all your wages, with no limit. Once your pay from one employer passes $200,000 in a year, your employer also withholds an extra 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on the amount above it.

Ways to change your paycheck
To change Maine withholding, file a new Form W-4ME with your employer. Each allowance lowers withheld wages by $5,300 a year, and you can ask for an extra amount each paycheck.
Bonuses paid separately can be withheld at a flat 5% for Maine.
- Update your Form W-4. Claiming dependents, checking the Step 2 box or asking for extra withholding changes how much federal tax comes out of each paycheck. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help you fill it in.
- Pre-tax deductions. Money you put into a traditional 401(k), an HSA or employer health insurance comes out before federal income tax, so your take-home pay drops by less than the amount you save.
- Bonuses. Employers often withhold federal tax on a bonus paid separately at a flat rate. Add a bonus under More options to see it.
